The school was named after the aviator, Ross Macpherson Smith. Sir Ross Smith was born in Adelaide in 1892 and was educated at Queen's School, North Adelaide. He saw service as an infantryman at Gallipoli; he was a light horseman and machine gunner. He was involved in a battle which saved Egypt from the Turks. He then joined the Australian Flying Corps, becoming a most successful pilot. After the First World War he made the first flight from England to Egypt. Sir Ross Smith's next challenge was to win the prize offered by the Commonwealth Government to the first aeroplane manned by an Australian crew to fly from England to Australia. Sir Ross Smith achieved the flight in a Vickers Vimy aircraft by landing in Darwin on 10 December 1919. This took him roughly 28 days. From Darwin, Ross flew to Sydney then his home town of Adelaide where he landed in the fields on 23 March 1920.
